The motorcade accompanying Sgt. Ervin Romans heads south on I-680 for the Oracle Arena on Friday morning for services for the four policemen slain in Oakland on March 21. At right: Firefighters suspend the American flag over Diablo Road for the funeral procession to pass under; residents on the sidewalks held their hands over their hearts in mourning. Romans, a Danville resident, was killed in the line of duty when he and other members of the Oakland Police Department SWAT unit entered a building where a suspect wanted in connection with the shooting of two other officers was said to be hiding out. The suspect opened fire through a wall, killing Romans and another officer.
