Meet the candidates running for the 10th Congressional District on Tuesday, Aug. 11, in the Le Fevre Theatre at St. Mary’s College. The five Democratic candidates meet at 7 p.m., and the six Republicans at 8:15 p.m. The other three candidates, representing the Green, Peace and Freedom and American Independent parties, will not be participating in the event as they are all running unopposed and will not be challenged in the Sept. 1 primary election. The discussion is being sponsored by St. Mary’s College, the League of Women Voters of Diablo Valley and the Contra Costa Times.

  1. Why is the League and the CCT having 2 debates, when Democrats and Republicans are all on the same ballot in this Open Primary. It’s a rare opportunity for persons registered Democrat to vote for a Republican, and vice versa in this Closed Primary State. Closed Primaries increase political polarization, which contributed to the large CA State budget imbalance on July 1. A possible Constitutional change may be to switch to Open Primaries, for all elections, as many other states have.
