The players on Danville’s San Ramon Valley High girls’ varsity water polo team were focusing on something more than their success in the pool during their opening match in the sectional tournament last Saturday.

The team sported blue ribbon tattoos and T-shirts in recognition of prostate cancer awareness and handed out awareness bracelets and information about early detection of the disease to those attending the Wolves’ home game against Union City’s James Logan High.

The Wolves were inspired in part by teammate Makenna McClaskey, whose father Mike has battled prostate cancer for more than five years.

In the pool, the San Ramon Valley squad dominated James Logan that afternoon, shutting out the visiting Colts 22-0 in their quarterfinal matchup in the North Coast Section (NCS) Division 1 championship tournament.

The Wolves are headed to the sectional title game this weekend after defeating Livermore High 28-1 in the semifinal Wednesday. Top-seeded San Ramon Valley, which entered the tournament with a 23-1 record, received a first-round bye.

Waiting for the Wolves in the championship game are the crosstown rival Monte Vista Mustangs, who have also posted an impressive postseason run so far.

The Mustangs, seeded No. 2 after a 17-5 regular season, defeated Antioch’s Deer Valley High 23-5 in the first round Nov. 6 and then beat San Ramon’s California High 20-4 last Saturday.

Monte Vista advanced to the championship game after besting Las Lomas High (Walnut Creek) 17-8 in the semis on Wednesday.

The all-Danville final to decide the NCS Division 1 crown is set for 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Acalanes High School in Lafayette.
