A former treasurer of the San Ramon-based Diablo Valley Youth Football League was arrested Wednesday morning after authorities allege he stole more than $200,000 from the children’s sports organization.
Lynwood Burress Peyton, 64, of San Ramon was booked into county jail on suspicion of felony embezzlement, according to San Ramon police Lt. Craig Stevens.
City police began investigating Peyton after two league board members found discrepancies in the league’s financial records regarding the amount of insurance costs compared to what was actually paid, according to Lt. Denton Carlson.
“(Peyton) did have complete control of the finances and submitted false documents to the executive board to cover up the stolen funds,” Carlson said.
Police allege forensic analyses of financial records for Peyton and the league revealed the San Ramon man embezzled more than $200,000 during his tenure as treasurer, which spanned from 2007-14.
Investigators arrested Peyton on a probable cause warrant for embezzlement Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the parking lot of the Promontory View apartment complex off Deerwood Road in San Ramon, according to police.
He was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility with bail set at $50,000. Peyton’s arrest took place less than two weeks — 12 days — after his 64th birthday.
These nonprofit leagues need to have more checks and balances in place. Giving one person total control over the finances is ludicrous. It’s not a sign of mistrust if you have a multi layered financial review system in place. It protects everyone. Volunteering doesn’t mean giving up common sense.
This story repeats itself over and over and over in this area….when on earth are organizations going to wake up and acknowledge that there should ALWAYS be two people counting and checking the money. Ridiculous.
Similar to the loser guy who embezzled over $200,000 from Sycamore Swim Team.. Sad how those in position of trust deceive and steal.
