A 19-year-old Marine from Danville was killed in Afghanistan Friday afternoon, according to Councilmember Mike Doyle. Joshua Corral was a 2010 graduate of San Ramon Valley High School and enlisted with several of his friends.

“This tragedy will touch everyone who lives in our community. The strong graduates that come from our schools and enroll in the military give every moment of their young lives to fight for freedom for us and for those who need our leadership to reach for those values,” wrote Mayor Karen Stepper.

Corral played freshman football at the high school, and his death was announced to the crowd attending Friday night’s home game against Castro Valley as well as at a tree lighting ceremony for Hospice of the East Bay.

“We have no way to express in words the vacuum that has been left in Danville by the early death of such a brave warrior,” Stepper continued.

Corral is the first SRVHS grad to die in combat during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and his death has devastated the town, Doyle told reporters.

Corral’s death represents the second Bay Area war casualty in as many days. Sean Walsh, a 21-year-old California National Guard soldier from San Jose, was killed Wednesday in Afghanistan’s Khost Province, the Department of Defense announced Friday.

Walsh died from injuries suffered when he encountered indirect fire during combat operations. He is the second California National Guardsman to be killed in action in Afghanistan.

  1. Very sad time for our close knit community. There will be a Candlelight Prayer Vigil this Tuesday evening at Oak Hill Park by the Veteran’s Memorial in Danville (next to Monte Vista) at 6:00 PM …
Please join us in putting our arms around Josh’ family and honoring our fallen hero.

  2. My Marine Corps flag and my US Flag (that flew over us US 7th Fleet) is out in Honor of my fellow Marine, Lcpl Corral, USMC.
Please attend the vigil and bring your school age children. All must understand what war is all about, and what the ultimate sacrifice really means, and its toll.

  5. I am a SRVHS graduate from class of 02 and an Army Veteran. I want to go to the vigil on Tuesday night but I have never been to one. Do you bring your own candle? What do you wear?
