Today, a group of neighbors met with current and past elected officials for coffee discussion in Walnut Creek. The topic was communicating with governments including community engagement at governments meetings. The officials clearly prefer direct meetings with citizens, their groups and committees to best understand the requirements to remedy issues. The same officials suggested that government meetings of boards and councils are often too late to mitigate issues subject to decisions and/or advisories. The general recommendation is to seek meetings with elected officials and/or their staff early in any consideration of an issue subject to a board or council decision so governments can fully investigate such issues prior to board or council review, discussion and decisions.
The subject of government communication and community engagement is now being taken very seriously throughout your readership region and your ability to survey may be the opportunity to determine how important your story on such engagement and communication might be to your readers.
