After my experience this morning the time has come for a more regular surveillance by the cops along the Iron Horse Trail to clear out the menacing alcoholics that linger on the benches. There is one sad fellow in particular that has shoulder length reddish blonde hair and a black baseball cap that is now there at least 3 days a week absolutely snot slinging drunk. His hangout is normally just north of the museum and now he has a compadre that sits next to San Ramon High. I have a feeling he has a long arrest record but he just keeps coming back and now he has company. I'm certain our town officials monitor this site and I just wanted to speak out for many of us and ask that resources be devoted to make sure this unique and wonderful trail continue to be safe for all of us. These guys give me the creeps and I'm certain female runners/walkers have felt the same sense of personal risk as we encounter them. Next time I run past them I will call the DPD and say "they are here again". Sadly, I used to see same unkempt young man in the baseball cap stumbling along Diablo road years ago as I took my kids to Los Cerros and to see his promising life slowly extinquished over the years is a real lesson in life. He must be a local and I hope he gets help, but getting wasted and sleeping on our benches downtown is not acceptable behavior.
