Hanging Tuff at tennis

Experience will be coming face to face with youthful reflexes

Attention, tennis fans. The annual tennis event that pits the Rudgear Tuffs against the San Ramon Valley High School boys' tennis team will take place at 3 p.m., Thursday, May 7, at the high school.

This event is held each year in honor of Coach Bob Vincent, the founder of the match who passed away in January 2003 at the age of 80. He was a leader in youth sports and a much-loved coach at the high school.

But older tennis players remember him as the founder of the Tuffs, seniors who have been meeting Monday and Thursday mornings at Rudgear Park since 1982.

Roger Emanuel, whom Vincent named CEO of the Tuffs to replace him, was pleased that Coach Andy Lutz of SRVHS again was able to arrange a match this year.

"He sees it as a way to show the boys that there can be a lifetime of tennis after high school," said Emanuel. "A number of our octogenarians provide evidence of that vibrant lifetime."

Even in retirement, Coach Vincent remained part of the high school tennis community - the courts are dedicated to him - and he started the tradition of the Tuffs playing the San Ramon team each spring during its "bye" week.

What a great afternoon this is for the experienced Tuffs and the younger men on the San Ramon tennis team. Both learn and enjoy the other generation, and the respect shown at the end of it all, is so gratifying to see. They share food and fun and it's a very worthwhile day for all. What fun it's been, to observe it for many years.
