A burglar went for overkill yesterday morning when he backed his car through the plate glass storefront of Market Place Liquors then proceeded to take cash and flee on Bollinger Canyon Road toward the freeway.
While burglars sometimes smash windows, said Sgt. Steve Fajardo of the San Ramon Police Department, it is unusual to drive a car through one for entry.
The incident happened a little before 8 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the store in the 1000 block of Market Place in the same shopping area as Orchard Supply Hardware.
More than one witness called the police, said Fajardo, as there was activity around OSH. An alarm also went off. The liquor store was closed for business until 9 a.m.
"When we showed up there was glass everywhere and leading out of the parking lot," Fajardo said.
After backing his vehicle into the store, the burglar removed cash from a drop box behind the counter and knocked over the register. The store owner did not report anything else missing, said Fajardo.
Witnesses said the lone burglar was wearing a red sweatshirt with a hood. The car was a light blue Toyota sedan. Witnesses were able to provide license plate information.
"The plate on the car came back as lost or stolen in San Bruno," said Fajardo.
Often a stolen license plate will be put onto a separate stolen vehicle, he noted, saying, "It's most likely going to turn up being a stolen car."
"The store does have a surveillance system but it appears to have not been working properly," said Fajardo.
The incident has been forwarded to the investigations division. Anyone with information is asked to call the police at 973-2700.
