Photo essay: The last hurrah

Wolves take brave stance but fall to Spartans

The varsity cheer squad rooted until the last second during the heart-stopping contest between the San Ramon Valley High boys varsity basketball game against De La Salle in the North Coast Section Section 1 semifinals last night.

The Spartans emerged victorious, 55-53, as the Wolves fought back from an eight-point deficit. During the last seconds, San Ramon's Chris McNealy had the ball but his shot didn't drop to tie the game.

It was also the last game for the cheerleaders, with everyone glad to have made it to the NCS semifinals.

The Spartans face Newark Memorial for the championship at 8 p.m., Saturday, March 6, at St. Mary's College.

Actually, San Ramon Valley may play one more basketball game in the NorCal Regionals this year, because the North Coast Section (NCS) included all semifinal teams in their bracket which will advance to NorCals. However, since there is no "third" place NCS game, the Wolves will likely play a road game as a low seed somewhere in the Central Coast Section (San Mateo and Santa Clara counties) or the Sacramento-San Joaquin Section or perhaps San Francisco, Northern, or Oakland Sections.
