Fatalities are down and DUI arrests are up both statewide and in the Bay Area so far during the California Highway Patrol's maximum enforcement period Memorial Day weekend.
CHP officers have arrested 203 drivers allegedly under the influence between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday in the Bay Area, up from last year's regional count of 193 drivers during that same time, according to CHP Sgt. Trent Cross.
Statewide, CHP officers have arrested 1,406 allegedly drunken drivers, an increase from the 1,296 drivers arrested this time last year, Cross said.
One fatality has been reported in the Bay Area's CHP jurisdiction during the holiday weekend, which occurred in Antioch. Last year there were five fatalities between Friday night and Monday morning, according to Cross.
The maximum enforcement period lasts until midnight.
