A former Walnut Creek police detective pleaded not guilty earlier this week to felony statutory rape charges, according to the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.
Shawn Wallace, a 45-year-old Walnut Creek resident, pleaded not guilty Monday to one felony count alleging that he had sex with a 17-year-old girl in 2010.
Wallce became acquainted with the girl, now 18, while investigating a case in which she was an assault victim. The two became friends and Wallace helped the girl find a job as well as live in his home.
According to reports, Wallace resigned from his job on Feb. 3, the same day he was arrested, after six years on the Walnut Creek Police force.
If he is convicted of the charges, Wallace could face up to three years in prison. He is scheduled to return to court June 23 to set a date for a preliminary hearing.
Wallace's attorney was not immediately available for comment.
