Former Blackhawk resident receives rare NBA honor

Chris Mullin's jersey, number 17, retired by Golden State Warriors

Former Golden State Warrior Chris Mullin has received a rare honor from the team he made home for 13 years: his jersey, number 17, has been retired by the team.

Mullin, a former Blackhawk resident, played for the Warriors from 1985 through 1997, and again in 2000 to 2001. During that time he was named an NBA All Star five times and helped the Warriors make five straight playoff appearances.

A sold-out crowd in Oakland came to watch Mullins get the honor Monday night in an event that was marred by the booing of Golden State's owner, Joe Lacob.

For five consecutive seasons, from 1988 until 1993, Mullin scored an average of 25 or more points and five rebounds. He also was on the U.S. Olympic basketball team, bringing home gold medals in 1984 in Los Angeles and in 1992 in Barcelona.

Last year, the former shooting guard and small forward was inducted into the Hall of Fame's Class of 2011, along with Dennis Rodman and Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer.

The 47-year-old spent five years as the Warriors' Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations before becoming an NBA analyst for ESPN. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2010 as part of the 1992 U.S. Olympic basketball team.

According to his Wikipedia page, Mullin has a daughter and three sons, one of which plays basketball for De La Salle

After three years at De La Salle, Chris Mullin Jr. Made the move back east to Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Massachusetts for his Senior year. Mullin's dad, is originally from Brooklyn, New York before playing at St. John's University and the majority of his career for the Golden State Warriors. Chris junior is a very good 3 point shooter and could of been helpful this year during the playoff run.
