A robbery attempt at a jewelry store on San Ramon Valley Boulevard in San Ramon resulted in a fatal shooting of the suspect around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, causing traffic to be re-routed during rush hour between Norris Canyon and Crow Canyon roads.
The San Ramon Police Department responded at 4:35 p.m. to the report of an armed robbery at the Gold N Treasures, located at 2550 San Ramon Valley Blvd.
The victims and witnesses reported that four suspects entered the store, said police; at least one of them was armed with a handgun.
Store personnel and a customer were present at the time of the robbery, according to police reports, and during the robbery, a victim armed himself with a handgun and shot the armed suspect, who was identified as Kibrom Bairu, 18, a Hayward resident.
The suspects fled from the store, and suspect Bairu collapsed on San Ramon Valley Boulevard in front of the store, police said. He was arrested by arriving officers and transported to San Ramon Valley Regional Medical Center by ambulance, where he was later pronounced dead.
The other suspects fled in a mid-90s white sedan. They have not been located, and the case is currently under investigation, police said Thursday morning.
