Unionized Castlewood workers ask City Council to support labor agency's rule to end lockout

Group asks council, community to join its rally this afternoon at country club

Union members, who said they are among those who were locked out of their jobs two years ago in a wage and benefit dispute at Castlewood Country Club, asked the Pleasanton City Council last night to support their rally to get their jobs back.

The group's plea at Tuesday night's council meeting came only days after Administrative Law Judge Clifford Anderson of the National Labor Relations Board found that Castlewood's lockout, which started Aug. 10, 2010, was illegal.

In a written opinion, Anderson recommended that the NLRB order Castlewood to reinstate the locked-out workers and pay them two years of back wages and benefits. That could cost the private country club more than $3 million in wages and benefits.

Judge Anderson gave Castlewood 28 days from the time of his finding on Aug. 17 to either accept the terms and pay the workers, or move forward with an appeal.

The locked-out workers told the council that they plan to hold at 5 p.m. today at the club's Valley golf course at on Castlewood Drive and urged council members and others in the community to join them.

"I want to congratulate you and commend you for your courage in standing up to this issue for so long," Councilman Matt Sullivan told the workers.

Locked-out Castlewood cook Carlos Mejia said, "We've been saying for two years that Castlewood wasn't giving us a fair chance to get our jobs back. Now Judge Anderson is saying the same thing."

"I hope this will be a wake-up call to the golfers that they need to stop stalling and put us back to work," he added.

Anderson's opinion states: "I find that that the (Castlewood Country) Club had abandoned its earlier good faith bargaining for a new contract and, as of August 10, 2010, the respondent was no longer bargaining in good faith with an intent to reach an agreement. Rather, it was unlawfully endeavoring to frustrate the bargaining process and reduce the possibility of the parties arriving at any agreement."

"I further find that the Respondent's conduct on that date and the positions taken in bargaining on that day were undertaken because of its animus toward the union and animus to the locked out employees who supported the union in bargaining."

Added Castlewood janitor Francisca Carranza: "We're thrilled about the decision, but we know we could still have a long fight in front of us. We'll be here for as long as it takes to get our jobs back and win a fair contract with health care for our kids. We know people in the community will stand behind us, just like they always have over the past two years."

Are these workers asking for the sky or just decent wages and healthcare? If the requests are within bounds and the Country Club is being recalcitrant then its the 1% against people like cooks and janitors and it makes Castlewood look very bad, but as many of us know they probably don't care.

Realize the article is written by the Labor/Union side of the issue. The City of Pleasanton owns and runs a golf course "Callippe" They do NOT pay for any benefits for their food service employees. - No Healthcare No Pension - Nothing. However they will be asked to make a judgement/opinion about a private club that for years was providing Full Medical Benefits to PART Time employees AND their dependents. Does anyone know a company anywhere that does that. The Club decided that when the current union contract expired that the new contract would not include Healthcare for part time employees. In addition the Full timers would have to pay a portion of their Healthcare costs. This is in line with all other employers for that industry and better then other Country Clubs in the area. The union decided that they wanted more - the club would not budge and they were locked out. It was not a wage issue but a Healthcare issue. The National Labor Board that ruled on this is just a union sympathizer that rarely sides with any employer. Castlewood had already won in court before it was appealed to the NLB. This is not over. The union is just trying for more public sympathy. My advise is that they should have done better in school.

Thank you, SP, for giving the facts on the issue. All I hear from the press is Castlewood members are evil and money grubbing, not that we're talking about health care for part timers.

This is probably being led by SEIU (socialist types). Down with unions. Hire Americans do to their jobs. Enough. Golly gee whiz---didn't see one ounce of "diversity" in the workers' names!!
