Village Theatre marks 100th anniversary

Special 'Engagement' set Nov. 16 as end of year-long celebration

The year-long celebration of Danville's Village Theatre's 100th anniversary will culminate Saturday with "The Grand Engagement." The Grand Engagement will include a Gala, an Opening Reception for the current art exhibit at the gallery and a Centennial Presentation.

The Gala will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Town Meeting Hall. Wine and appetizers will be available and historical photos of the theater will be on display. The first 200 attendees to arrive at the Gala will receive a commemorative wine glass.

The Opening Reception for the exhibit "Barn Dance: Celebrating Our Agrarian Heritage" will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at Village Theatre Art Gallery.

Local leaders will highlight the various ways the Village Theatre's historical building has been used throughout its 100 year history during the Centennial Presentation from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Village Theatre.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the theater's website or call 925-314-3463.

Many memories from the past at the Village Theater! I was totally freaked at the matinee's on Saturdays - 10 cents - in the late fifties, and I spent the night in my parents bed recovering from the scary "Blood Rust" and the "Crawling Eye". Great red suckers and Jujubees for 5 cents and the loges always full of the older kids making out.
My grandfather worked at the San Ramon Valley Chapel next door and helped with the temporary morgue that was set up in the upstairs of the theater after the F-27 plane crash out on Tassajara Rd. from a flight from Las Vegas...many silver dollars at the crash site reported but no survivors.

Hi Chris,

Great comments about the memories. Would you mind sharing those with our staff who are trying to collect stories from the history of the VT?

If you're willing, just contact Program Supervisor Jane Laris at (925) 314-3465 or jlaris@danville.ca.gov.

Thanks and hope to see you this weekend at the Gala!

Geoff
