Danville man dead in head-on crash

Crow Canyon Road closed for two hours

A man killed in a crash between San Ramon and Castro Valley late Sunday afternoon has been identified by the Alameda County Coroner's Office as 25-year-old Geoffrey Mapplebeck.

Mapplebeck, of Danville, was driving on Crow Canyon Road about a mile north of Norris Canyon Road around 4 p.m. when he was involved in a head-on collision, the California Highway Patrol said.

The road was closed for about two hours while crews investigated and cleared the crash.

A sig alert, closing the road in both directions and warning drivers to avoid the area, was issued around 4:30 p.m. and lifted just before 6:30 p.m. when the road reopened.

Online profiles list Mapplebeck as a programmer at ScrubbClock.

Additional information about the accident was not available due to the Veterans Day holiday.

This section of road is curvy and head on crashes seem too frequent. It's a great way to get around freeway traffic, but the accidents happen and there doesn't seem any efforts to make that road safer. I haven't used this road in recent years, but when I did, I wished there was a lane divider of some sort.

My sincere condolences to the young man's family.

Drivers tend to speed on CCR. Was this possibly a factor in the collision? Also, why is there no mention of the other driver's condition and/or injuries? After all, It was a head-on collision.

My condolences to the family.

Dear Mappleback Family,

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Geoff. A death of anyone is tragic and your family is in our thoughts and prayers. Once again we are sad and shocked as he was working in his passion and found himself. So unfair:(
