Streetwise: Dealing with disaster
Melinda Vincent, Retired transportation manager: I was working in San Leandro under several swaying florescent light fixtures and a giant shaking glass window behind me when the Loma Prieta earthquake struck. Even though I knew I should move to a safe place, I sat there frozen, and nothing broke and fell on me. I immediately called my husband at work at the Port of Oakland who told me his office wall had opened up and he could see the parking lot and the Bay Bridge through it. Also, another associate had broken his teeth on the Bay Bridge when his car crashed three cars behind the car that fell into the Bay. We were all fortunate that day.
