Man arrested for stashing wine in pants

Employees caught a 41-year-old Danville resident putting a bottle of wine inside his pants and leaving Lunardi's Supermarket without paying for it last week, said Danville police Sgt. Troy Craig.

Officer Chad Pryor arrested the shoplifter Friday afternoon, Jan. 5, and took him to the Martinez Detention Facility. The bottle of wine had a selling price of $16.99.

Craig said there could have been a number of motivations why the Danville man wanted to steal the wine.

"Everyone's got their reasons," Craig said. "We can't really explain it."

He said a clerk working at Lunardi's, on Railroad Avenue, spotted the man putting a wine bottle in his pants. After the 41-year-old hid the bottle, he bought a bag of potato chips to make it seem like he was buying something from the store, Craig said.

When he was leaving Lunardi's, employees detained him until police arrived.
