Waste collection adds up for orchestra

The free electronic recycling event in Danville and Walnut Creek two week ago, hosted by Universal Waste Management Inc., helped generate more than $6,500 in donations that will help the Young Artists Symphony Orchestra (YASO).

The musical group was organized in 1980 as the Diablo Youth Orchestra by parents, teachers, and community volunteers who were concerned about the absence of classical musical opportunities in the Diablo Valley. The orchestra used this opportunity to help raise funds to send their young musicians on a musical tour through Austria.

State law enacted in February 2006 prohibits the disposal of electronic waste because of the long-term environmental threat. Universal Waste Management Inc. operates a permanent facility in Oakland that is open to the public six days a week, and hosts free public collection events, such as this one to support the next generation of musicians. Jake and Ben Cherry, founders and managing directors, grew up in Alamo and were excited to bring this service to their community.
