Candy theft reveals unlawful brass knuckles

Danville police caught a 17-year-old from Venture School allegedly carrying an unlawful weapon and stealing candy from the Alamo Safeway on Sunday evening.

The Danville youth pocketed candy from the Safeway and was found four miles south by San Ramon Valley Boulevard and Sycamore Valley Road, where Police Officer Eric Nygard stopped him at 11:20 p.m., said Police Sgt. Troy Craig.

When Nygard contacted the juvenile, he found the youth was chewing on the stolen candy, which was in his pocket, and he also was carrying steel brass knuckles, according to the report.

"He stated he was using it for protection," Craig said.

The juvenile was taken to the Danville Police Department and given a juvenile citation, which is an incident synopsis sent to the Juvenile Probation Department in Martinez. Department officials would proceed with the matter, Craig said. The youth was released to a parent.

"A lot of people carry things that are good for their protection," said Craig.

However, many of the weapons may be classified as unlawful and carrying them may be categorized as a felony offense, he said.

"This is one of those perfect examples," Craig said. "(Even though) there is ignorance of the law, there is no excuse."
