Wolves upset snaps Mustang lacrosse winning streak

San Ramon ends cross-town rival's 23-game EBAL run

by Rachel McMurdie

In a game that rocked the local boys lacrosse status quo, San Ramon Valley High School finally earned a win over rival Monte Vista on Tuesday night last week.

The 13-4 upset put an end to Monte Vista's undefeated league record, which it has held since the beginning of the East Bay Athletic League's inaugural season in 2004. Those 23-game wins included eight wins over the Wolves, two of which were decided by just one goal.

This time, the Wolves wouldn't leave anything to chance. San Ramon Valley (10-4, 6-0 EBAL) put four quick goals into the net after Monte Vista had tied it at 1-1, and started the second half with a 7-2 lead. The Mustangs (10-23, 5-1 EBAL) drove for a comeback in the second half, but each time the Wolves had an answer. San Ramon Valley won 14 of the game's 18 faceoffs, and after each of Monte Vista's four goals, the Wolves put in a goal of their own less than a minute later.

Girls Lacrosse

Allie Van Dorn scored five goals in San Ramon Valley's 15-8 girls lacrosse win over Granada last Friday. Alyssa Lempesis added three more goals to the Wolves' score. Casey Bowels and Jessie Esteban added another two each. With their first league win, the Wolves move to a 1-5 EBAL record.

Stephen Cunha's homerun set up the Mustangs on their way to a 3-1 baseball win over Amador Valley last Friday. The Dons (11-7, 1-5 EBAL) scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Monte Vista, kept quiet through the first four innings, tied the score in the fifth and took control, scoring again in the fifth and sixth. Starting pitcher Chip Tengler, who had a 1.4 ERA, recorded the win with the Mustangs.

With the win, the Mustangs (10-6, 2-2 EBAL) move to a third-place tie with San Ramon Valley (9-7, 2-2) in the race for the East Bay Athletic League title.

San Ramon Valley earned a win over Granada on Friday in a 13-7 win.

San Ramon Valley girls softball team couldn't muster their bats against California's Krista Miller. The Grizzlies' pitcher allowed just two hits and struck out six in their 2-0 win over the Wolves. San Ramon Valley (12-4, 3-1 EBAL) came into the game ranked No. 2 in the East Bay, but the game quickly soured for the Wolves when Mariah Nisbet's second-inning triple drove into the left, scoring two Cal players.

Across town, Monte Vista (7-10, 0-5 EBAL) struggled against Livermore, losing 0-5 to the Cowboys.
