Scouting for food next weekend

Thousands of Scouts, from first grade Tiger Cubs to teenage Scouts and volunteers, will be going house to house Saturday, Nov. 17, to collect food for families who are less fortunate. Residents are asked to donate canned and nonperishable food that will be delivered to the Food Banks of Contra Costa and Solano counties, which supply food to more than 200 agencies.

The annual Scouting for Food Drive helps people with the basic essential of life - food. Each month, Bay Area Food Banks serve more than half a million people, 48 percent of whom are children, through food pantries, children's programs, shelters, soup kitchens, residential programs and other emergency providers.

Last year the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council, Boy Scouts of America collected 209,088 pounds of food but chairman Jeff Hart and marketing chairman Mark Curtis announced that the target this year is 220,000 pounds.
