Watching the game

Sometimes a story is a series of observations that can allow a reader to share in the experience. The story "Bragging rights" about the football game between San Ramon Valley High School and Monte Vista was written in this style, for the reader to "be there" at the exhilarating scene of the cross-town rivalry that Friday evening. The reporter - who has no allegiance to either side and enjoys covering events at all the schools - attended the game to take part in the excitement, observe it, and report on it.

The story, which ran Nov. 16, was a glimpse at teenage culture, and how the entire community enjoys this particular event. It wasn't about good sports and bad sports, or even about the athletic event. Of course the football game was at the center of the activity, but the excellent endeavors of the athletes is a story for another day; indeed we want to thank the dedicated young men on both teams, as well as junior varsity and frosh, for providing us with exciting football all season long.

This particular story brought many old-timers back to the days of attending games in their youth because high school football games are something special. Talk about the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat! The fun of the game in high school is in the experience of extreme emotions. And since San Ramon Valley was favored, it was probably harder for them to lose and more exciting for Monte Vista to win. But the students from the two schools are not really enemies. They were opponents for the night, aided and abetted in their emotions by fireworks, band music, cheerleaders and the chill night air. Quotes containing "*#@" were not meant to demean the speakers; that's pretty much the way teens talk, for better or for worse. Just an observation.

Dear Dolores,

Well said. After all, it is only high school and football and should not define anyones life. This isn't TEXAS!

Now if the played Rugby, it would be a different story!

Smile,

Hal
