Poet Laureate 'speaks to our hearts' at awards event

by Geoff Gillette

What better way to meet the person chosen to represent the town through the power of poetry than to have her recite a poem during the annual awards ceremony and mayoral installation?

Those in attendance at the gala event got to meet the first Danville Poet Laureate Nancy Fraze and to hear her read her newest piece, "Timeless Legacy."

"This town, our Town of Danville, belongs right now to folks just like you and me. We came by birth, by marriage, by school location or by job transfer. We've come here to live; to breathe, to love and work and play. We're building a future and farming our today," Fraze read to her captivated audience.

The 50-year-old Danville resident was chosen in November to become the town's poet. The idea of having the position in Danville came from resident Elm Battersby, who went to the Town Council and asked that the position be created.

"We really owe Elm," said outgoing Mayor Candace Andersen. "She brought this to us and got it going."

After the council agreed to create the honorary position of Poet Laureate, a committee was formed to consider the applications of those residents interested in taking on the role.

Of all the applicants, committee members found themselves in agreement that Fraze, a legal assistant for Chevron, had the gift of words that they were looking for to represent the town.

"I'm just so excited by it," Fraze said. "Poetry speaks to our hearts and I want to be a part of that process.'

Fraze said she has been writing poetry since the sixth grade. "It was called 'The song of the wind's daughter' and it won a prize. I've been making word pictures ever since" she stated.

She has written a number of poems and self-published her own book of poetry, "The Paper Wait."

As Poet Laureate, Fraze will perform at town events and help to support and present the arts in Danville during her two-year term.

Hi,

Where is Nancy Fraze's self-published book of poetry, "The Paper Wait" sold? May one buy it locally?

Thanks,
Ann Damaschino
