Keep 'Wigged Out' in town

Downtown Danville is undergoing extensive self-examination as Discover Danville, an organization of downtown merchants, tries to figure out the best way to draw customers to its shops and services. Meanwhile, zany musical comedy "Wigged Out" just finished its season at Victoria's Hair Onstage on the corner of Hartz Avenue, Hartz Way and San Ramon Valley Boulevard and is looking for a new home.

The production's organizers aren't worried about finding a new place to present their spoof, a notoriously campy cabaret-style comedy. They say venues are available throughout the Bay Area and they are confident they will find something.

But Danville should be alarmed at this potential loss. "Wigged Out" has been sold out for most performances as it has grown in popularity over its 15 years. It began as a small skit put on by employees of Victoria's salon and grew into a professional production, with its season running every weekend from November through June, two performances a night, at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Now Victoria's has been sold and the new salon is not interested in hosting the performances, which is understandable. The former partnership was successful for many years but would not necessarily work for every shop.

But that is no reason for downtown Danville to lose "Wigged Out." It was perfect for drawing folks to downtown restaurants before and/or after the performances. It was the type of comedy that could be enjoyed periodically because the performers updated their material based on current events plus about 20 percent of each show was improv and the audiences were an integral part of it.

Hopefully some other partnership will emerge to provide a venue for "Wigged Out." Its cast comprises seasoned professionals who can be seen in other plays throughout the Bay Area. We are lucky the show began here in Danville and we should keep it here.
