Ezekiel Gilliam of the Diablo Black Men's Group is congratulated by James Weston as he goes on stage to accept his surprise award as a Remarkable Man at the second annual Remarkable Men Leadership Conference, held by Inner Media Vision Inc. Nominees must be DBMG members who have made contributions in the areas of leadership, professionalism, community involvement and family
Gilliam, president of DBMG from 2005-06, managed its growth by educating the membership in choosing good team leaders. He consults for the Mt. Diablo Unified School District and was a high school teacher at Pittsburg High where he started his own scholarship program for students who needed help making it to college. He funds the scholarship on his own and usually awards two scholarships per year. He is well known throughout Contra Costa County and has assisted many nonprofit agencies, including Hope Hospice.
He and his wife Viola have sponsored and supported children, including raising them in their home while helping others through schools and other outlets. One such girl founded a perpetual $2,000 scholarship under his name.
Another passion of Gilliam's is helping Africa. He was recently in Ghana for his fifth trip, where he is helping residents develop a transportation infrastructure to allow them to get to jobs in the big city.
