Thousands of Scouts, from first grade Cubs to teenage Scouts and volunteers, will be going house to house Saturday, Nov. 15, to collect food for families who are less fortunate. Residents are asked to donate canned and nonperishable food to be delivered by the Scouts to the Food Banks of Contra Costa and Solano counties, which supply food to more than 200 agencies. Door hangers, sponsored by Valero, will be delivered to households this week.
The number of people needing help with the basic essentials of life - food - has increased drastically. Each month, Bay Area Food Banks serve more than half a million people, 48 percent of whom are children. Last year the Mt. Diablo Silverado Council, Boy Scouts of America, collected almost 200,000 pounds of food and it is targeting 220,000 this year.
