New exhibit highlights fun with fabrics

Museum of the San Ramon Valley displaying quilts through Sept. 27

Don't just look at the quilts on display at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley by yourself. Let a docent show you around so you can appreciate what you are seeing.

"Quilts! Tradition with a Twist" is the current exhibit showing many different artistic styles.

"Most quilters like to try a variety," said Jane Lewis, owner of the Quilter's Inn in Danville, which collaborated in the exhibit. She noted that it coincides with a biannual event called Diablo Valley Quilters Show at Charlotte Wood Middle School. It will take place 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 26; and 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 27.

"A traditional pattern made with different fabrics is my favorite," she added.

The exhibit shows pictorial quilts, styles from the Civil War area and some with photos printed on fabric and sewn in. One quilt has 48 squares with state birds embroidered by a woman who came to the United States from the Philippines in 1945; her daughter assembled them into the quilt. One quilt has an Oakland A's theme, while another bright quilt is all amphibians.

Six quilts were sewn round-robin style, with one person creating the center portion and then passing it on to another quilter to add to it. "They have an autumn theme," said Lewis, noting the cute little ghosts, goblins, witches and jack-o-lanterns.

The quilts will be on display through Sept. 27, and volunteers from the Diablo Valley Quilters' Guild will be on hand to demonstrate a variety of skills on Saturdays, Aug. 15, Sept. 5 and Sept. 19. Fun activities include making yo-yo fabric circles that will be joined in a chain and used to decorate a Museum tree at Christmas.

Museum visitors are also given the opportunity to identify the locations of a variety of quilts that have been placed in businesses around town. Each entry slip that correctly lists the locations will be placed in a drawing at the end of the exhibit with the winner receiving a quilt donated by the Quilter's Inn.

The Museum of the San Ramon Valley is located at 205 Railroad Ave. in Danville. Admission is $5 per family; $3 for adults; $1 for children. Museum members are free. Call 837-3750 or visit www.museumsrv.org for more information.
