Composting helps people recycle their yard waste; helps Contra Costa County reach its state-mandated waste reduction goals; and finished compost improves soil texture and adds valuable nutrients to keep plants healthy.
The workshops cover active composting and passive composting. With active composting, one actively maintains a system using the Three-Step Method that will produce compost in six months or less. In passive composting, residents add yard waste to their bin or pile and pretty much forget about it. This is easier to do, but takes over a year to generate compost.
