How-to: Letters to the Editors

An often asked question requests an outline for writing letters to you and other editors that will gain readership and consideration. I often recommend direct contact to you by telephone and suggest that you have offered assistance to authors in writing letters, news releases and guest articles.
At these critical times, with a financial crisis consuming global wealth, authors wish to write commentary on the importance of our in-depth consideration of our ballot selections. More importantly, such authors want to demand candidates and proponents fully present their critical evaluations of our issues in local, county, state, national and global issues.
A newsworthy letter has the following components in less than 200 words:
A topic sentence that states clearly the purpose of the letter and invites interest by the readers.
Two or three sentences that summarize issues that provoked the letter writing.
A paragraph that details the issues' impact on the reader.
A paragraph that offers possible resolve.
A closing sentence that requests an action.
Possibly, Dolores, in your very well-written editorials you could outline how letters are the voice of the people and provide an author's guide to format and style.
