March madness comes to Danville

Original post made on Mar 22, 2010

St. Mary's College center Omar Samhan, a graduate of San Ramon Valley High, wades into his college's cheering section after the Gaels beat the No. 2 seed Villanova in a basketball upset, 75-68. It was the second NCAA game for the Moraga college team, also played in Providence, R.I. Samhan led all scorers with 32 points. The St. Mary's team now advances to the NCAA "Sweet Sixteen" next Friday, March 26, to play Baylor in Houston, Texas. Photo by Mark Curtis.

I saw Omar play in high school, and it is absolutely amazing how through hard work and dedication he has improved his body and game to the point where he belongs in the NBA!! I also love his honesty, swagger, and appreciation of the loyal Saint Mary's fans. He is exactly what makes college sports special, and if the Golden State Warriors ever wake up and do the right thing, they will draft him, and pick up a quality person, quality player, and someone who will help sell tickets.

Congrats to Saint Marys, the last team in the state of California still in the tournament!!! Who would have thought that such a small school would be the best college basketball team in the state of California in 2010(Yes, you heard me correctly, Cal Bear fans!)

That Gael's win was under-handed....

With FIVE Aussies from down-under, to give them a hand, it is no wonder they won.

Seriously, it is very impressive that such a small school would do so well - a great tribute to the coaching staff as well as the gritty determination of the players.

So even more so in a year when once mighty UCLA didn't even qualify......Go Gaels!
