Fire district launches iPhone app

Original post made on Jul 6, 2010

After announcing it in mid-April, the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District finally launched an iPhone application that is said to be the first of its kind. Its reported intent is to provide a "virtual window" into the district's 911 dispatch center with real-time access to emergency activity occurring in the community. The smartphone program would also reportedly allow the district to communicate with users during a disaster.

It works very good. Will be cool to now know where the trucks are headed when they pass. Great pix too.

just curious - anyone know who funded the software development and deployment?

The story said it was written by college students volunteering for the District (and it's an Apple Store app dummy - there is no deployment).

Nice looking app, but I've been doing this for 8 years on various web-enabled phones. From what I can tell the data is the same as what goes to and has since 2001. Not as flashy as but still pretty useful.

And if you don't have an iPhone and want similar alerts you can follow various twitter accounts and get updates via SMS. Web Link
