SAT scores up in the San Ramon Valley

Original post made on Aug 23, 2011

In 2010, the last year for which numbers are available, five of the eight local high schools showed improvement over 2009. The percentage of San Ramon Valley High School scores over 1500 -- a state benchmark -- climbed by more than 10 percent, from 76.47 to 86.98 percent. California High School jumped about 3 percent, from 71.69 to 74.70 percent.

More statistics without reference: 1500 is a "benchmark." 1500 out of how many possible points? 1500 as a minimum requirement for State Universities? As "average?" Across the board in all socioeconomic areas?

A score of 1500 is the benchmark set by the state of California for students across all socioeconomic levels. As of 2005, the SATs include a writing/essay section that brings the total point value to 2400.

Why, back when I was in high school, all we got were up to 1600 points. Has the world really expanded that far?

5 or so years ago the College Board added a third section to the SAT, an essay. Good idea to actually see if students can write rather than just multiple choice which is what the math and verbal sections still are . So total possible score went from 1600 to 2400.
