Outreach from the Town of Danville

Good afternoon,
In a recent thread there was some discussion about the outreach from the Town of Danville. In the past few years, we have really stepped up our efforts in this regard, so I thought I would take a few moments and outline how the Town is working to get information out to our residents on the many projects, programs and events here in Danville.


Web page: Our Town webpage www.danville.ca.gov has a great deal of information about the Town, the departments, programs and services. The front page has links to all of the departments, as well as our community calendar, our "how do I" section and our "what's new" section. "What's new" carries short articles about things happening around Town. As new articles come online the older ones go into an archive.


Project pages: Because there is a great deal of interest in development here in Danville, the Town instituted the creation of project pages on the website. Project pages give all of the relevant information about a current development application, as well as a blog updated with the latest steps in the development process and a means of contacting the planner responsible for the application.


Social Media: A recent addition to the Town's outreach efforts is social media. The Town has established a page on Facebook www.facebook.com/danvilleca. Two other place pages are also available, one for the Danville PD www.facebook.com/danvillecapolice and the Village Theatre and Art Gallery www.facebook.com/villagetheatredanville . Information items are posted on those pages throughout the week. A Twitter account @DanvilleInfo has also been established and the Town sends out tweets on a variety of topics such as the closure of the grass fields due to rain to the progress of the procession carrying Lnc. Cpl. Corral through the downtown. Pictures from Town events are posted on a Flickr account and videos are posted on both YouTube and Vimeo.


Publications: The Town's Activity Guide is published to inform residents of upcoming classes and events. Seniors are able to hear more about the services available to them in the Silver Streak and Recreation Services puts out an e-mail newsletter.


e-News: e-News is an e-mail subscription service. Interested individuals can sign up to have notices sent to them on a variety of subjects. Any time a notice or informational release is sent out, a copy is e-mailed to the subscriber.
Press releases: Information is sent to the press on a regular basis for use in their online and print publications.

The Town works to be as transparent and available to our residents as possible. Go to our pages and 'like' them, utilize our Twitter feed or subscribe to e-News. We welcome input on how better to communicate with our residents.


Hope this helps give a sense of the various channels of communication used by the Town of Danville.

There seems to be a big increase recently in suspicious strangers who do not live in the neighborhood going door to door allegedly seeking donations for alleged charities or trying to sell something. While some may be legitimate, often it looks like they are up to no good and may be casing neighborhood to see who is home.

Does Danville have an ordinance dealing with this like some other cities, such as requiring they register, or limit hours, etc? Is there a non-emergency number with Danville police we can call so they can check these people out? I think it would be good deterrent to criminals if they knew neighbors will call and report suspicious people to the police.

Dear Editor,

As part of the No HOME out of VIEW presentation at the AIA Public Safety Fair, Creekside Church, Alamom, on Saturday, March 24, 2012, the answers to "no solicitation" will be provided as a neighborhood practice in our region. A home with a posted no solicitation sign does not have to acknowledge any door-to-door activity and may ask the solicitors to leave the property and call the police if they don't.

To the first poster...don't you think it would be useful to say which neighborhood you are talking about? I live on the south side of town on the east side of 680 and haven't seen anyone.

Thanks for your information. It's all good stuff.....and you do (and have done) a good job of "talking" to us.

I think that the EARLIER comments/postings were about "not getting enough notification and notice" of certain things (usually property/zoning changes) happening in the area.
Just to focus on that issue for a second:
One of the problems I have is with this whole notion (as utilized by the legal system) that ONLY THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE WITHIN "X" FEET OF THE SUBJECT PROPERTY are interested in what is being proposed to happen to that property. Only they need to receive official notice. Only they are primarially interested and affected by this proposal.
I know that MAILINGS cost a lot of money and that is a primary reason why a certain perimeter is established. But in today's Internet society, that excuse shouldn't continue to hold water.
In reality, the changes (zoning, etc) to properties affect many people and far beyond that limited distance perimeter.
I know that I am interested in and ultimately affected by what happens with freeway exits in San Ramon, with Danville freeway construction projects, with Danville lane changes around the Sycamore/680 part of town (and with many roads throughout the East Bay), by happenings to the Caldecott Tunnels and Bay Bridges, by construction and traffic around Green Valley (and by any school, as well), by the addition of huge solar systems, by brightly colored signs posted all over cell towers, etc..........AND NONE OF THESE PROPERTIES IS WITHIN 100-500-1000 feet of my house, so I don't get direct official notice.
I try to stay informed about what is happening. Yet, even I, find out about some things after-the-fact or after-it's-too-late.
***There needs to be a newly conceived system about HOW to get the info out and about WHO really wants/needs/should get the info. Only abiding by the "legal requirement" is INSUFFICIENT for us.

Good morning,

Thanks for the question about solicitors. This is an issue that we hear about from time to time and seems to be somewhat seasonal. The facts of door-to-door solicitation are these:

• Solicitors must be permitted through Contra Costa County. Solicitors must show you the permit if requested

If you are concerned about a person soliciting, contact the Police Department at (925) 820-2144.

If the police are made aware of it, they can send an officer to check the person's permit and make sure that they are conducting legitimate business.

A few other tips as well: at no time should you invite a solicitor into your home. Nor give them any personal information such as driver's license numbers or social security. The best way to keep solicitors from coming to your home is to put up a no solicitors sign.

Good afternoon,


I just wanted to take a few moments and respond to the questions posed by Fandanville regarding notification on projects/zoning changes etc. We have always tried to maintain the highest possible standards in regards to getting information out, and with all the new avenues of communication available we are working to adapt to the changing times.

To start with, let me address the issue of notifying residents within a certain distance of a project area. The law says that we need to do that and that has to be done in specific ways. We are required to post it at the Town Offices, in the legal section of the newspaper and send it to those residents within 300 feet.

As I mentioned before, we do this out to 750 feet, and in the case of the Podva development application we extended it to 1,000 feet so the neighborhood affected by the development would be completely notified. We do this so that neighborhoods have a good sense for
what is happening around them.

It is true in the digital age that there are ways of getting information out. And we are certainly trying to do that. The easiest way is to subscribe to our e-News service. You can choose what you want to be informed on. For the types of things mentioned, I would recommend signing up for agendas. Those will always have information on upcoming public hearings etc.

In the case of larger development applications, you can sign up to receive information specific to them. Examples are the Veterans Memorial Building project and the Elworthy project.

In addition, the Town creates project pages on our website www.danville.ca.gov where all of the documentation on a project is posted and a development blog is provided. The blog updates on the status of a project as it goes through the process.

On a more nuts and bolts level, when a development application is received a large sign is placed on the affected property describing the project and providing a contact phone number for the Town Planner assigned to that application. Principal Planner David Crompton makes himself available to answer development questions. He can be reached at dcrompton@danville.ca.gov.

We are doing everything we can to make information about Town programs, projects, services etc. as accessible as we can. That being said, we are always interested in hearing suggestions on how we can better get the word out to our residents. We are still working on the best use of our new social media platforms and we will be continuing to expand those efforts to reach the largest number of our citizens that we can.

Geoff,

Thank you for the information regarding outreach. But, in the private sector we try to measure the efficacy of what we do. How have you tried to measure the effectiveness of what you are doing and what are the results from residents on whether or not they see a difference?

I'm not trying to be rude, but, just because you are doing work does not mean it is effective.
