Burglar bagged by sharp-eyed neighbor

Original post made on Aug 28, 2009

An early morning burglar was stymied last week through the actions of a vigilant neighbor. Danville Police Department Lt. Mark Williams said a 21-year-old Danville man was arrested in connection with the Aug. 17 incident.

Great resolution. Kudos to the neighbor (who was up and looking outside at 4-something in the morning!). It underscores a point I've discussed other times on this forum, though. The reporting party called Danville PD at 4:24 on a Monday morning, ostensibly a quiet time for police in Danville, and the suspect was still able to do what he wanted and leave the immediate scene before police responded. Fortunately, this was a relatively minor property crime, but what if the man had other intentions? Please don't think the police are your first line of protection. They want to be, but their role is largely reactive. Hope is a lousy defense.

What vigilance and - more importantly - action. Thank you "neighbor" for thinking enough of your community to make that call.

It would help to know if it was a person from that neighborhood being opportunistic on foot? Or was it someone with a car driving around from a different neighborhood? Meaning, was it a one time thing from a random person up to no good, or are people driving through neighborhoods looking for opportunities and this is a consistent threat? As far as the individual who called it in, kudos to the vigilant neighbor who was at the right place at the right time. We all need to be neighbors for each other just like that!

Doesn't anyone find it interesting that the items taken from the car were a bottle of vodka and a bottle of chardonnay? Only in Danville!

I'm thankful for the neighbor that was up at 4:24 am in the morning looking out their window, in the dark, no less, to see someone snooping around a garage. I'm not so sure I would be so lucky.

...and to the burglar's actions, chardonnay.... vodka, cell phone, duh - what was your previous crime, stupidity.

Never-the-less - I'm sure our resident feels violated? But probable thankful the crime wasn't worse.

I'd like to say something prophetic - but I've got nothing!
