Caltrans answers questions about Interstate 680 construction

Several Caltrans officials were on hand at an open house on Wednesday night to answer the public's questions on the I-680 pavement rehabilitation and southbound HOV lane extension project, which began in January. And this morning, there were guys out fixing some of the torn orange fence. I don't know that I would have sent them out in the rain myself, but I guess they were already clocked in to do something.

Another question I asked was "why the orange fence at all?", and the answer was basically to protect the hillsides. From what seems mostly to be from careless contractor movement of equipment etc. It's cheap disposable fence so when it gets broken it's no great loss.

The last question I asked was why take out the new(ish) center divide that was only put in when the current HOV lane was added not that long ago. The answer is that the repaving is going to raise the road surface enough that the height of those barrier sections would be sub-standard, so new barrier to the new required height is needed.

Is this design system going to end up being better off or worse off for those local Danville drivers who utilize the freeway to makes jumps between Sycamore to Diablo Rd....or Sycamore to El Cerro....(or vice versa)?
Won't the metering lights slow down and stop our ease of movement?
Is there a special access lane running between Sycamore to El Cerro....or what?

If it ends up being a slower design than what we have right now, then it will be a dismal failure for Danville.....and cause more in-town traffic, slow downs, and danger. More in-town congestion doing those hops to SRVHS, etc..
Is anyone from the Town really looking out to protect us here!?! We need faster local traffic flows in Danville, not slower.

I couldn't make it to the meeting to find out. Frankly, I suspect the worse.

There's also a hotline at 510 286 5820 where they promise to answer questions. Call, ask, and post a followup with answers to the things that concern you.

However, my understanding was no significant changes to the flow, except for the HOW extension from Livorna to Rudgear. This is principally pavement repair.

With the HOV (Carpool) Lane being extended through Danville, we have LOST another freeway lane for LOCAL use. This will make the other non-HOV lanes more congested......and will make it slower to utilize the freeway for LOCAL hops across town. This is NOT GOOD for Danville!

The CalTrans site doesn't specifically mention whether there will be Metering Lights installed, but someone, in an earlier message, mentioned that there would be. CalTrans is going to be working on the entrances.
For Danville, these metering lights will be nothing but an unfortunate hassle and slow-down for us all.....and might even backup our city streets around the entrances (if done poorly).

Has Danville Planning studied what CalTrans will be doing?

Yes, the freeway potholes needed to be fixed, but now they have escalated the bringing in the HOV lane and entrance changes to us.
I doubt it will be good!

I may sound pessimistic.........but I've experienced these freeway changes happen throughout CA and seen the end results.

psmacintosh, the HOV lanes have run through Danville for more than ten years! There's no change there.

It's being extended from Livorna to Rudgear, which last time I checked, isn't exactly Danville.

I've seen no mention of metering lights from Caltrans. When I lived through their introduction on the other end of my commute, they improved the flow on the local streets, and aren't turned on most of the time. If they are added here, it's not something to worry about.
