Spring Cleaning

When I think of Springtime I think 'fresh' and 'new'. So for me, spring-cleaning means picking up all the nick-knacks in life and making a fresh start. As a teenager, spring-cleaning can be a pain in the derrière! Spring-cleaning can be a long process and it can last for multiple days. Like a lot of people/teenagers, I don't have a large attention span, so I usually start complaining after the first hour or so. Therefore, by my own admission, I usually spend more energy complaining then actually doing the cleaning.

I don't like spring-cleaning because it means that on top of my usual chores of vacuuming, taking out the trash, washing dishes and cleaning my room, I have to do even more. This is the season to go through the clothes in my closet and make sure everything still fits. It is also the season to do some deep cleaning. And to make sure everything is super clean I've got to get down and scrub that tile floor! It is about cleaning that oven and scraping the food off the stove. Spring-time is also allergy season. So, to make life less miserable for family or friends with allergies, we want to make sure we clean out all those dust bunnies under our beds and couches before they come over.

It's also very important to make sure I cleanse my mind. I love this kind of spring-time cleaning because it is a time for me to focus on my thoughts. I like to meditate in my room by myself and just picture myself in a meadow surrounded by nature. You can take yourself out of your busy life to just be alone even if it is for just a few minutes. It is really a healthy thing to do. Springtime is fresh and new so you should give your mind a new start, too.

Have you ever gone through old photos and found pictures you didn't know you had? Well, I've started doing that and it is really nice to see how people in my life have changed. I found this one picture of my friend when we were in fourth grade and he was eating a cookie. I had no idea that I had that picture and neither did he. So, when I sent it to him he was quite shocked to see himself as a fourth grader, again. It's so much fun to look at old photos, it's like traveling back in time and seeing everyone when they were younger. But it's really hard to look at those pictures when they are all over the place. There are some in this box and some in that box and there's some in that drawer, and nowadays people put their pictures on their computers, too. So take time out of your deep cleaning and spend time sorting old memories.

Sure, the actual cleaning isn't any fun, but doesn't it feel great at the end when you can say, 'I cleaned the house!' or 'I took time and meditated today!' or even 'I looked through and cataloged my photos today'. You don't have to do everything in one day. Do a little bit each day and you'll be done in no time!

So well said, Corynn! And, you are inspiring me to continue to do my own spring cleaning (literally and figuratively)! :-)

Thanks for another great blog...and happy spring!
