Original post made on May 8, 2013

Police arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with robbing a pharmacy of prescription drugs on Thursday evening in Walnut Creek. At about 6:45 p.m. a suspect walked up to the store's pharmacy counter and handed the employee a note demanding Oxycodone and simulated having a handgun.

RC, it is not another Stupid kid, it is a kid calling out for help with the disease of addiction. Obviously, you know nothing about drug issues. This kid is another victim. You do not even know his story and you are already casting judgement. Drugs are not prejudice and the disease of addiction affects all kinds of people. The highly educated, the not so educated, the religious, the moral, the sweetest, the cutest, the handsome, the CEO's, the wealthiest, the poorest, the politicians, musicians, Educators, do I need to go on?! So I hope you find it in your heart to speak kinder of those who suffer with the disease of addiction because I know that this person has and probably will never say one bad thing about you or your mistakes or poor decisions you have ever made. I say this from my heart and a parent of a child that suffers from the disease of adduction.

I agree with Deborah! Some people have nothing else to do but sit around judging others!

My son is an addict so I know exactly what I am saying. Another stupid kid who decided to do drugs. It was not a disease he caught, it was a stupid choice to start and continue to use prescription drugs. Do I feel sorry for them? Yes I do and it still a stupid thing to do. Robbing a drug store? No excuse for being that stupid.

RC, I feel your pain. You are angry and feeling hopeless. I know because I acted and reacted just like you before I found my recovery and support at Nar-anon. Of course robbing a pharmacy is not a good choice but do people on drugs make good choices? No! I invite you to make a difference in your life and the life of your child by visiting our Nar-anon meeting on Monday night at 7:30pm at the Danville Grange in Danville and anyone else out there who feels the pain of loving an addict, a friend or family member. Nar-anon saved my life and my addicts life "Just for today!"

RC, we could all say the same, another idiotic parent that doesn't know how to raise a kid... For instance, I wonder how selfish the parent was?, I wonder how blind the parent was to their kids needs? etc... So much can be said about the failure of the parents, that while sitting in judgement behind the wall of our computers, it stupidly might make one feel better. I am sure you don't like that judgement!!! That said, my perception is that there are far more adults hooked on prescription drugs than kids.

Marrushi,
You sound disappointed! Is it because someone did not kill and/or mutilate someone? Boring to you? Terrorists did not blow up 100's of people? What is it you would like to hear? Personally, I would like to read about joy, happiness, peace, love, the giving, the receiving etc. but the horror and the blood and guts get priority over all that. Can you do something about changing that? Sounds like you are pretty intelligent and know what is good for everyone to hear and talk about.

These threads on stories like this do a great job pointing out the lack of information that so many have when it comes to the disease of addiction. Yes RC it is a disease and it is also highly genetic and does tend to run in families and be sex linked concordant. What this means is that it is more likely to be transmitted from father to son. Addiction is not substance particular so an alcoholic can pass the addiction gene to an offspring who can then become addicted to any substance alcohol or prescription drugs. We need far more eduction in schools and other areas for our youth to really understand addiction and how their risk is enhanced if they have blood relatives with addiction to any substance.

Debora,

Yes, end the marijuana prohibition! Decriminalize cannabis in California! It has already begun...
