Governor's fact-finding panel finds BART management, unions 'far apart' on bargaining

A three-person fact-finding panel appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown heard firsthand Wednesday how far apart BART and its labor unions remain even though they've been bargaining since April 1.

BART management said the average union worker makes $79,000 a year in wages but Harrington said that's only true if highly-paid management officials are included and the average union member makes the lower figure of $66,000 a year.

Pretty funny..."highly paid management officials"...translation: overpaid union bosses.

SEIU seems intent on pushing their membership into oblivion. There demands for unskilled workers has reached a new high or low. It's time to make transit strikes illegal as it allows a small group to impact the economy of an entire region. If they can't live on more benefits and wages than the majority then fire them all and rehire a non-union group. The line for employment would run from Pittsburg to Fremont. Let your state congressional representative know that we cannot be held hostage by these union bosses.

I simply cannot get by on $79,000 a year.
Most definately would need food stamps, Obamacare, and housing subsidies just to make ends meat.
Why don't you conservatives understand?

Transportation around the SF Bay should be as cheap as possible.....and taxes cheaper as well (almost 10% sales tax now on everything)
Nobody wants to say it, but............ Fire the workers. Remove the Union. Hire new workers (at lower pay for the easy work involved).
There I said it. (I wonder if Unions have made it "illegal" to say those words or take such actions?)
Unions use these same "extortionistic/strike" techniques in "politics," as well as "business."
"Politician, we made you, so do what we want or else your out......"
Unions take more and more of their members money and then use it for political blackmail that is beyond the control and say of their members unique positions. (All money goes to Democrats and liberalism and bigger government, regardless of any members true position.)
Millions of dollars of excess union dues is the beginning of a lot of political corruption, almost entirely supporting the Democrat party.
It's a rigged game.

@PSM, The 'law' of supply and demand clearly stipulates that when an item, service or even commodity becomes highly sought after or falls into short supply, the price will rise.

If your 'need' for transportation was high, and so was that of your neighbors, then one might expect with a finite supply of transportation options, the cost for transportation would be proportionally high as well. Then the question becomes does the relatively high cost of a ticket to the rider simply become added profit for the organization or does some portion get shared with the employee base. So when was the last time you actually rode BART and contributed to this economic paradigm?

BTW, like this model? It's what drives every union shop in the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL where ticket prices, TV viewership, memorabilia sales all increase each union members 'pay' as more individuals 'need' to attend, watch and wear.

The solution is simple. Terminate everyone, right up and including the BART Board and start over. Jerry Brown appointment a new board. Put the word out, "NOW HIRING". The line would be at a mile long. Create a common sense contract. Slash the compensation package by 20%. Offer to rehire experienced employees at this new compensation level...and keep the system running.

NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO STRIKE...I HAVE BEEN IN UNIONS AND WHAT MOST OF THE WORKERS WANT IS TO WORK. BUT THEY ARE PRESSURED TO ACT LIKE SHEEP AND FOLLOW THE WOLF PACK OF BE EATEN. Flush the trouble makers down the toilet and start fresh.

How is what workers doing much different than say boards that decide to confer multi-million dollar packages to executives?

Only difference being the workers are doing it via the union whereas the board and CEOs already have a cozy relationship.

Commuters you have the option to not ride, pay more for taxi/gas or force the bart board to negotiate sensibly.

The entire BART strike ia over issues of more money. It is one thing and one thing only, American Greed. It is an attempt by the union to extract more money from the system and the public will pay more if the management caves in again. If you haven't ridden lately, take yourself on a little trip soon and you will see that the trains are not clean, the seats are old and stink and it is not always safe. One time recently I was on and a fight broke out that fortunately did not escalate into violence other than name calling and intimidation by one passenger who felt he was being dissed by a cyclist who bumped him by mistake. One was a hoodie and the other was a student going to class. You tell me who was the intimidator?

What does 'a hoodie' wearing youth and the current BART strike have to do with each other?

Is there some expectation on your part that even if the overseeing Board of Directors could get all BART workers salaries reduced to minimum wage (without benefits) immediately that your little vignette would play-out differently? Perhaps, your pseudo Geotzian experience on a commuter train is a subconscious message to yourself to avoid BART and message boards like this one.

I think all of the above posters are dead right: workers haven't been beaten down enough. We need bust those unions and make it so that folks beg for minimum wage jobs - then eliminate the minimum wage. We could probably hire a much better class of household servants then.

Of course, that wouldn't apply to those of us with six and seven figure incomes. We're special, so driving down the pay of those "little people" wouldn't affect us. We would hang on to the coattails of the eight and nine figure CEOs, because we're, well, you know - a **better class** of people.

So go get 'em! (Where are the Pinkertons when you need 'em?)

For anyone of these BART workers who lament they are not paid enough, after taxes the take home is about $3,200 a month. That is plenty for being a glorified bus driver. If you are so unhappy with your lot in life, go get an education.
