When a reactor melts down the pool of molten metal contains both uranium and hafnium, the metal used to control the reactor. Poring seawater in to cool this molten mix of metal is a bad idea. There is more energy there than this small amount of water can absorb. Plus there are unexpected results from contaminants.

A better moderator of the fission might be to pump molten lead into the reactor core thereby slowing maybe even stopping the fission.
