Rotary revisits Berlin Airlift

Danville Councilman Mike Doyle recalled being a young airman in 1948 in Germany during the Berlin Airlift during his presentation Tuesday morning to the Danville/Sycamore Valley Rotary at Crow Canyon Country Club. The American efforts to supply the residents of Berlin by flying in food and coal to overcome the Russian blockade immediately following the end of WWII kept West Berlin from going Communist, Doyle explained.

Great story and two good friends of mine. Mike Doyle and Col. Halvorsen. I served on the Berlin Airlift also in the British Zone at RAF Station Celle. This is one of two bases jointly operated by the USAF and RAF. The Airlift was a wonderful operation and recognized as the "Greatest Humanatarian Effort" by our Military. Proud to have served.
