Report shows work needs to be done to narrow achievement gap for minorities

An Oakland-based school research firm has released figures that show Pleasanton and San Ramon Valley schools are doing poor jobs in narrowing the achievement gap between African-American, Latino and students from poor families. Overall, San Ramon Valley rated a grade of C+, while Pleasanton came in at C- for the 2010-11 school year.

Another falsely based view!!

There was Head Start which cost taxpayers millions of dollars but it didnt work well.

This was designed principally for minority children.

No program address the most basic facts: no good books at home to read; no real parental guidance at home with reference to how to speak, read, or discuss; no real facts on how to dress properly; no mention of how much tv is watched rather then read, discuss rather the cuss.

The Home is everything which is not present with these persons.

They speak of home but it is commonly accepted that home life is most basic to do well at school. You can pour all the time, money, details on fallow grounds but no real sufficient yields from this.

How long will taxpayers just keep pouring billions down this hollow hole?

To do well requires self discipline rather then constantly pointing out the other side's lacks.

How often do we hear from the Chinese community about the lack.

The Chinese student arrives to study, memorize, read, spend hours doing homework.

Does this happen in the other homes other then pointing out the errors of the ways?

Learning is constant hard, consistent work; all lacking where needed!!! At home!!!

Old saying which is true: Cant make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

Still true.

I am so tired of hearing how it is the districts job to fix this. These students get more than the "average" student in San Ramon's education system, but as they say, "you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink!" These low achieving, low income families are forced upon us and they should not be getting special treatment. ENOUGH with the excuses and reverse discrimination – it is time for them to put in the same kind of work the rest of the "average" students do!!!!

Its comforting to know that the people who post on Danville Express represent a very narrow view of our community. The bigotry, homophobia, and racism that is portrayed in many of the comments is utterly distasteful and thankfully does not represent this exceptionally educated, intelligent, and caring community.

After exhausting and examining all possible factors that could responsible for this situation, there can be no possible other explanation than that far too much attention is being given to rich Asian and white students.

You have got to be kidding! Go look at the specially designed courses on the district website for those where English is not their first language. There is also the AVID program for these students. I agree with Douglas. Our school district bends over backwards for these students who think they are owed an education without having to work for it. This is one of the main reasons that California is so far behind in education compared to the rest of the country. It is just ridiculous!!

OH BOY

Did you read the bio on this group?
Such a grou. they would best serve fixing worse areas such Oakland, Stockton, San Francisco, etc for their poor educational level achievements.

But they chose San Ramon and Pleasanton which have the very highest achievement levels in the state IF STUDENT WANTS to seat down and study, work at reading, math, language usage.

Why dont these do good groups, Oakland based, work on teaching all these ethnic groups how to prepare their kids to get ready for "real" school life: work, tons of reading, tons of writing, language usage for commercial opportunities down the road?

No they want to "change" the district to accommodate a very few who cant produce, arent capacity ready, move from other less desirable areas and then say through organizations like this, you aint teaching me nothing.

Can you imagine that all these "highly" qualified degreed individuals are paid by special foundations to go into districts to "fix" them. "FIX" the home from whence these poor students come from!!!!

Just about every statement made states they want "all" students to be improved BUT EXCLUSIVELY ADDRESS minority students who already represent ethnic, social,historically ridden problems making it the district's problem. Whose problem is it? Home or the district's?

Social expectations, educational achievements come from the home with constant supervision, direction,guidance, books at home(neither exist), but ITS THE DISTRICT'S PROBLEM?

Then there is that ancient argument of by narrow minded twits such as Public Employee who can provide no hard information other then to accuse with bigotry, and racism with comments by others. This is always the case to make others seem less compassionate.

Fools Rush In Where Angels fear to tread. No facts, no positive information provided by the likes of Public Employee. Just the usual hate messages about whatever they regurgitate.

Have you seen the pattern? Leave Oakland, arrive to San Ramon etc then claim that districts dont help them.

You got the chart before the horse. One learns BASED on what home has prepared the young persons other then listen to crap, talk crap, none reading homes!

Oh wait is this racism to describe what is done?

Do we see the Chinese claiming they dont have "special" classes for them? They work their bones off AT HOME and AT SCHOOL to learn. Can this be said of other ethnic groups?

Wow, wake up get my coffee and read my sociology lesson for the day. A long article on obvious facts with no real solution and a non-profit organization gleaning facts of little merit to prove their need to exist and providing some employment for those that couldn't make it in the real world anyway.

Sadly, some groups do not value education. They just want equality of outcome, not opportunity. If the parents don't foster an interest in education, the teachers and the school district cannot fix it.

Absolutely True and fundamental to the whole argument.

If no real interest or effort done at home, why must the district do what the so-called parents failed to do.

Proven by the Chinese culture; they value education from day one. By other social groups who do the same.

But some want society to change for them rather then earn through very hard work what others, many prior Blacks earned, through sweat, work, time at the books but demand their "right" at any table just because they are on the face of the planet.

Oh my gosh, I am speaking racism retelling historical facts about groups and how they work to learn despite any hardships.

Under their core beliefs about education and students there in not one mention about the responsibilities of the parents. Apparently it's all on our teachers to get kids to perform that have no interest in doing so.

Actually, it wouldn't matter if I provided all the hard facts of educational research that would tell you that one of the primary responsibilities of education is to provide all students with the skills they need to succeed in this world. You would just reject the research, question my intent, and proceed with your narrow view of everything outside your bubble. Buts that OK, you are the minority, another hard fact that is hard for you and many of the commenters to accept.

What are you doing to help the chidren succeed?

Yes this is exactly and fundamentally true.

This is the best example of the American syndrome; Someone else made me bad and you all have to fix me!! attitude.

Someone else made my not want to sit down and study hard and do my many hours of homework.

It's the schools responsibility to "learn" me something so I can gets a good job down the road.

ALL WRONG AND BACKWARDS!!!

Just because someone doesnt want to sit down and sweat the work, doesnt mean that the boss is wrong or the district is wrong. It means that one has to leave the iPods, crap music, rap crap and hunting of relaxing pleasures to blame "them" for what one didnt want to do.

Its self development, self discipline not district largesse to make school time seem better then blame them all for missing the fundamentals at home.

And its the districts' and schools' responsibility to provide a safe and effective learning environment that allows all students the chance to succeed. Which means it is a district responsibility to change with the demographics of the community. This means new programs, new data, and new ideas. Welcome to the 21st century.

and no wonder you are.

Read the report rather then what you want to see.

The report states that very few are, percent wise, are in this category.

So why should a whole district made up by hard working students and homes
cater to those who dont want to, dont care to, and cant find their nose in it shows up in the mirror.

Unfortunately, your comments are just that public employees stuff about a whole district which first and foremost deals with those who want to be educated the vast majority of the student population rather then those who just recently dropped in and want something streamlined for just them when they "study" harder, and longer.

Everyone except public employee is connected to reality. Special programs and throwing more money at people who do not WANT or HAVE to learn is not the solution. Also affirmative action/special programs are alive and well so these lousy students can flash a "degree" from a college on our dime. Liberal/progressive programs have ruined the black family. They don't even know they are wearing the chains of democratic slavery---big gov take care of yous--everybody racist--vote dem and we takes care of yous!! We your daddy.

Open your dictionary... demographics: Statistical data relating to the population and particular groups within it. Really you want to change the demographics? Please think about what you stated.

You are correct "its the districts' and schools' responsibility to provide a safe and effective learning environment that allows all students the chance to succeed."

It is also the SCHOOLS reasonability to provide:
> qualified motivated teachers
> education tools

It is the PARENTS responsibility to:
> educate their children with proper MANNERS,
> properly FEED their children so they may focus on school
> properly DRESS their children so they may focus on school
> provide an appropriate and safe LIVING ENVIRONMENT so their children my bathe, sleep, study, and relax which allows them to focus on school
> PAY their taxes to pay for the schools...EVERYONE NEEDS TO PAY THEIR SHARE, NOTHING IS FREE. (including low income families)

It is he CHILDS responsibility to:
> use their MANNERS to maintain the classroom environment for their fellow students
> PARTICIPATE in the learning environment
> STUDY and do their homework

Morgan, wow! Read my statement again. School districts are here to serve the community. If the demographics of the community change, then its the districts responsibility to change with it. Unfortunately, you people think we ought throw everybody of color under a bus and say if you can't play with the white upper class people, than go to Oakland. Unbelievable, but truly entertaining!

So 2 % Black forces the 98% to change it's ways to accommodate them.

Both these districts do profoundly fantastic achievement scores and now each district must bend over backwards to those who arent ready so they become ready.

For What?

Can 2 or 3 or 4 years make up for all the years missing from proper preparations at home?

What was stated was that it is the districts responsibility to change with the demographics, not change the demographics. Pleasanton and San Ramon are frequently targeted by outside agencies to point out the disparity of low income versus higher income. Our demographics are really amazing and in Dougherty Valley the minority is non-caucasian and it is a superbly talented school with high marks in all areas that are measured.

According to the 2010 Bay Area census:

17% of the population of Danville is non-white
47% of the population of San Ramon is non-white.

Just wanted to correct your assumption that the School District only serves a 2% population of black people.

Again, that bubble must be comforting!

You are using the wrong stats. The article is about BLACK and LATINoS from LOW INCOME families. Non-white includes Asian and Indians families as well which make up a huge portion of those percentages!!!! Obviously, you are the one who needs a lot more education before you open your mouth again...

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2,879 persons (6.8%).

I just love how people from Danville and Blackhawk can sit in the comfort of our homes and discuss how latino and black people who come from poor families have no business being in our community. So much fun and so positive and caring. Thats the way we take of each other in our town, we just push out the ones we don't want. We should really do that nation-wide. The 2010 United States Census[8] reported that San Ramon had a population of 72,148. The population density was 3,991.1 people per square mile (1,541.0/km˛). The racial makeup of San Ramon was 38,639 (53.6%) White, 2,043 (2.8%) African American, 205 (0.3%) Native American, 25,713 (35.6%) Asian, 156 (0.2%) Pacific Islander, 1,536 (2.1%) from other races, and 3,856 (5.3%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6,250 persons (8.7%).

So, if I did my math correctly, there is only .5% blacks and 7% latinos between both communities which are not all low income. So why are we supposed to spend more tax dollars on things that only benefit a very small percentage of the SRVUSD's population? Public school is for the masses and programs need to be designed as such! Enough of this catering to these special interest issues...

What a certified misguided person with such a prejudiced view about who lives and works in these areas,

Person cant even read the report for accurate numbers provided by the report s/he wants to defend.

Usual ignorant stance in favor of racial invectives which serve to muddle an already confused mind.

What an excellent display of lack of research, presence of mind, language usage but else can be expected from an already weak,poorly educated group of real things, with real observations.

This group wants to attack San Ramon, and Pleasanton to gain a foothold on an already excellent student achievement level and yell foul that 2% who arrived late with no preparation but want into that group.

Once again, A silk purse cant be gotten from a sow's ear. Yelling about what a lower achieving group which has not ever shown how to study, read,reflect,and sweat in modern terms is a wonderful way to waste tax dollars.

Go to really low achieving areas to improve the masses there. Try Oakland, your base, Stockton, Concord, San Francisco.

Dont send so -called Phds to impress with "documents" stating the obvious, certain types dont study, have never studied, cant speak nor write standard English, and demand acceptance for EXTRA SPECIAL STUDIES TO further educate those who have never shown any effort to learn, achieved any academic excellence when these districts have done so with the students who want to learn.

If you dont fit in, dont slam the district if you cant learn, study, speak, or accept the standards found here.

Go Else where with you fancy reports to demonstrate the obvious.

Perhaps he is leaving because he knows the old guard of unions and codependent management time is coming to an end. The public education edtablishment needs big changes.

We have a golden opportunity To find someone who will has demonstrated ability to think different, and take down the education bureaucracy.

1. Someone who will demand good teachers in math and science earn major premiums

2, someone who will terminate the bottom 2 to 5% every year.

3. Someone who will foster the startup of a public charter district to compete with and force improvement on SRVSD

4. Someone who Understands that ossified teaching methods will be dramatically improved by cloud methods (e.g., Khan Academy)

5. Someone who will spend capital money wisely.
-Yes to spin off and charter investment; facilities configured and sized for teaching methods of the future.
-No to negative cash flow solar panels; and more of the same facilities.

The board hires the new management. I hope (but doubt) they are up to the challenge.

With regard to Louie's comment, learning these days is like

channel surfing; if one doesnt like what's on, just change the channel and keep on surfing.

Learning doesnt work that way. It's basic hard work, with lots of repetition to achieve something rather then complain about society is demanding so some can get by easier.

So no matter what these days, it's best to yell and demand and DUMB DOWN THE REST.

Amazing to see all the stereotyped assumptions posing as fact or informed opinion here.

"Frankly" could use an editor to turn his rambling posts into coherent sentences. Maybe then we could figure out what he is really trying to say. He seems to have a problem with minority students in his community. Beyond that, all he seems to be saying is that if your parents haven't provided you with the same supportive home environment and advantages that other students in the community have received, then you are out of luck in our schools and you should leave.
