I find it all too convenient for the Danville police officer to determine he was not at fault for the collision with a bicycle and injury of its rider. No matter what the rules say about bike lane usage versus sidewalks, it is more often impossible to ride in the narrow lane next to parked cars. Often, the safest place to ride in our region is the sidewalk or directly in the street because most bike lanes are too narrow.
I would hope reporters are being our watchdogs so that police can't simply eliminate blame for their involvement in accidents. It seems to me that is putting the fox in-charge of the hen house.
At least, this time they kept the guns in their holsters,

Bicycles can only lose in any accident with cars. We have seen the issues of pedestrians and cars in the Alamo business district and it is only a matter of time until we see similar issues as bicycles become more a part of Danville Blvd.
The reality is bicycles do not have a safe area on our streets, roads and lanes. Rules for bicycles put the rider in harms way by exposing the rider to cars that do not acknowledge any right of way for bicycles.
When a rider is injured in a collision with a car it becomes the rider's fault for simply being there. Now that's an oxymoron!
One HAL of a Pal
In response to Clair's posting, the police officer involved didn't determine he was not at fault. A police officer from San Ramon determined who was at fault. Cars do need to be much more aware of cyclists than is often shown by distracted drivers; however, cyclists also need to respect the cycling laws as well-especially the helmet law. This girl is very fortunate all she has are scraped elbows.
