New Children's Book Highlights Shelter Pets

Original post made by F. Dahlstrom, San Ramon, on Dec 12, 2012

A new book by local San Ramon author Fern Dahlstrom highlights a homeless tabby cat named Charlie and his journey to find his forever home.

In A Home for Charlie ( meet Charlie who is living on the streets and finding his own food and a warm, quiet place to sleep.

A Home for Charlie is raising awareness with children and their caregivers about the importance of adopting a shelter pet and focuses on how so many pets do not have homes to live in.

The author has done a number of readings in local pre-school classrooms and children are loving Charlie's heartwarming story. A portion of the proceeds are being donated to Tri-valley Animal Rescue and Berkeley Animal Care Services.

You can order the book for $9.99 from and the author will inscribe it for you!

A Home for Charlie is also available from Amazon: Web Link

The author will be reading and signing books at the Dublin Petsmart December 22nd from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. Readings will be one the hour. Holiday cookies will also be served!

Be sure to take a peek at the website and the book's reviews on Amazon. The book would make a terrific holiday gift for animal lovers and children everywhere.

This is terrific! Good on you, Fern.

Is there a local place where we can buy these books in quantity, in case we had a favorite kid-based charity for the Holidays? You've got me all inspired.

If anyone is so inclined, Sleep Train's Dublin location will take delivery and responsibility for as many books as you choose to buy on the book's website (they are two bucks more from Amazon, but you can get free shipping > $25).

Their address is Sleep Train, 7916 Dublin Boulevard, Dublin, CA 94568. "Larry" is the manager to whom I spoke -- you might address it c/o him -- seems like a good guy.

Remember, "Not everyone can be a foster parent ... "

Such a lovely idea!

Let me know what quantity you are thinking about via and we can chat about which distribution method is best :)

Thanks for your interest in A Home for Charlie and thinking about giving to charity.

This is the perfect gift for a child for the holidays. I bought a couple copies for my grandchildren and a couple for our school library. It takes children on a journey of a shelter cat and shows that there is a home for everyone.
