In today's hospital maternity wards, the growing practices of "skin to skin" and "rooming in" have turned the traditional newborn nursery into a relic of the past.

Interesting. I was allowed to room in/bond with all of my children and this was going back over 23 years ago. I had no idea it was not typical.
