BART management, unions trade barbs instead of meeting

With only five weeks left before a 60-day cooling off period expires, negotiators for BART management and its labor unions didn't meet at
the bargaining table this week but instead traded allegations that the other side is bargaining in bad faith.

BART management has already upped their offer several times, with minimal reciprocal movement from the unions. So it's time for BART management to finally stand firm. If I was negotiating on behalf of BART, I'd simply say that the most recent offer from management was on the table for one week after the cooling off period ends, and then it goes back to the prior management offer (not as good). And one week after that, it goes back to the previous offer before that.

The unions have completely unrealistic expectations, which have only been encouraged by BART management's willingness to make better offers, even without any significant movement by the unions. This isn't rocket science, it's Negotiating 101.... A strike wouldn't be the end of the world, and might actually serve to inject some realism into the negotiations.
