Is the SRVUSD Solar PV approach too expensive?
Information provided by Solar PV group members, major producers and suppliers outlines new panel and inverter technologies that allow for more efficient distributed panel networks. Such multiple placements on various buildings on the main MVHS campus would allow localized and distributed power. Also using newer thin film technologies rather than the many decades old crystalline technologies would create more power from smaller and fewer panels making placement on main buildings more economical and more efficient.
Thus, as these experts acknowledged, there is no need for a separate structure above the MVHS parking lot in Alamo to be a centralized solar PV power station. By various examples, including the studies by NREL, projects with new and special structures typically have higher costs due to the construction of dedicated structures and excavation for power distribution.
SRVUSD's presentation to CCC-MAC Alamo tomorrow night is informational because it is not the county's decision. SRVUSD is a state-monitored district. MVHS neighbors should certainly attend Superintendent Enoch's presentation at the March 2 CCC-MAC Alamo meeting. But such neighbors should join neighborhoods throughout our region in approaching state organizations, Joan Buchanan's office and SRVUSD board to avoid any new construction in Alamo for MVHS.
Further, neighborhoods should request AIA planning review and direct independent public advisory to SRVUSD Board and the State organizations that provide management oversight. If the cost of new construction is removed, solar PV networks could be affordable for more high schools than MVHS and eliminate the constant preference by SRVUSD board and administration for MVHS.
