Why do we read fiction books?
What do you think of when you hear the words ‘fiction books’? Do you role your eyes thinking of Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, and all of the screaming fans? Or how about, Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien? There are so many different books to think of, but the thing is, they are all the same. They’re fiction; they aren’t real. So what’s the point in reading them? You could be doing things that are so much more productive like, homework, chores or looking for a job, there are so many things to do in the ‘real world’.
But fiction books allow readers to escape reality even if it’s only for a chapter. We all wish we could change things that have gone wrong in our own lives and we want to know that we aren’t the only ones who make those mistakes. What about when you just want to be comforted but no one is around to help? Why not use a fiction book and escape to that other world and a different reality? Read a book and watch a character work through there own problems and say ‘Hey, they were attacked by demons/vampires/werewolves/warlocks and survived, so I can survive too!’ Yes, it is true you could never be attacked by demons/vampires/werewolves/warlocks, but it somehow still gives us that extra push at times when we need help to get through the rest of our day.
Fiction books have always been around, so why are they so popular now?
The fiction books you hear about the most right now all have something in common. There is always a romantic aspect within the plot of the book. In Twilight, the romance and drama between Bella, Edward and Jacob became the motivating factor for all readers, both young and old, to finish the series. The same holds true for the series Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith, and the romance is between Elena, Stefan and Damon. Another thing that the two books have in common, is that they are both about vampires, and they were turned into a movie and a TV show.
But there’s more. There are other books that don’t have the media publicity, but they are just as popular. For example City of Bones by Cassandra Clare, has a plot unlike others, it has you on the edge of your seat waiting and wanting to know what’s going to happen next. A book is almost guaranteed to be a success if it can make a girl squeal, because then that girl will tell all of her friends to go and read the book and they will tell all of there friends and soon you will have a whole high school gossiping about “the unbelievably good looking guy” and “how could he ever end up with a girl like that?”
The cost of a book.
A person could easily spend a hundred dollars on books and in these hard economic times that is too much for a lot of families. But no one wants to deny his or her child the chance to read a book, so what do you do? Yes, you can always go to the library and check out books for free but there are plenty of times when the book you want to read isn’t there, or, it’s already checked out. So you need to find another way to get the book.
What about the iPad? Yes, you can read books on the iPad, but some people can’t afford it, so there is the Kindle. It isn’t as expensive and you can share books with other friends who have a Kindle too without having to buy them. But if the Kindle is still too costly there is still hope to get your book! You can go to a used bookstore like Bay Books. They have both new AND used books. The books are cheaper, but they are all still in good condition. Bay Books will also buy books from you so if you have a book you’ve read five times and you don’t think you’re going to read it again, take it to Bay Books to sell and then buy new books.
There are so many reasons to read a fiction book and so many different types of fiction books to read. So why not join in on the fun and read a book?
