Former fire captain arrested after allededly stealing from fire district

The Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office is expected to review a case against a retired fire captain and Alamo resident who allegedly stole a wide array of property from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District while employed there.

If this ex fire captain is found guilty as charged, will he be made to make restitution as well as lose all or some of his excessive retirement wealth due to fraud, theft, and or personally seeking to aggrandize himself at the expense of public funds which taxpayers have had to pay in a stealthful manner??????

Naturally, his defense will be that he "borrowed" or had informed someone of his"borrowing" but that someone didnt record or accept the request as valid or someone else in the system was participating with him.

Any real legal comments would be pertinent to the issues involved would help to shed light on this punishment issue. How much more does an ex-captain need when they are paid so well in retirement????

I wonder if this is the same LaMorinda battalion chief we see using his fire department vehicle to drop his kids off at school each morning. I guess when you are entitled, you are REALLY entitled.

The newspaper article in this morning's paper indicated he earned a salary of %101,000 in 2011 and earned overtime pay of an additional $100,000 that year. These guys have no shame, no wonder the system is going broke. Pension spiking at it's finest !!

Two separate comments:
1) Yes, firefighters are well paid, but please remember that they run in to burning houses while everyone else is running out. As the former director of a Burn Center, who has treated injured firefighters, and has taken military firefighting training, I can assure you I would not want thier job at any pay rate.

2) A thief is a thief, and if proven guilty, Mr Wilmot should be punished the same as any other thief.

Firefighters risk their lives, that is true. That is part of the job and they know that going in. They also do not work 40 hour weeks, have fantastic health care and retirement, and most of them, if not all, have other careers/jobs on the side. But what else is true is that they are overpaid and overcompensated for what they do. They have strong unions and also have great public relations departments that keep the public aware of their risky jobs. Maybe in major cities where they actually fight tough high rise fires in buildings and apartments, but in the suburbs they may have several fires a year. The loss of life is very low in small towns and cities as compared to big cities. Maybe their pay should be commensurate with the risk where they work. But, of course, it won't happen cause the unions are too powerful.

Louise - well articulated!
But, firefighters do much more than put out fires. They are responders for all kinds of needs, from minor incidents that turn out to be fairly benign, to major emergencies that are life threatening, not only to the victim(s), but also the firefighters. Yes, they know their lives are always in potential peril, but take on the job, for which the rest of us are thankful. We have several firefighters in our neighborhood. Some of the experiences one has shared with us is absolutely harrowing, as we find it hard to fathom how tortured people's lives can become.

Should there be a fairer correlation between work and compensation? Is there corruption, abuse of privileges? Sure! But then there are a lot of highly paid execs and mid-high levels managers out there who are adept at shuffling memos, b-s'ing at meetings, and brown-nosing all week long, resulting in higher consumer prices for products/services. Should our public employees be expected to adhere to a higher standard than those in the private arena? Rodney King - "Why can't we all just get along?" - fairly!

Let's be frank....the firemen are ripping us off and they know it.
What other job can you retire at 51, get $190K until you die and fully covered health care benefits for your dependents? Remember, when you retire at 51 we will pay for these benefits much longer than they ever worked for us. Retired Firemen....no wonder you guys move to Colorado when you retire, we prefer to not be next in line to you ar Safeway....

there are plenty of people who would take the job. Don't be absurd. They're not "special" - get over that nonsense.
The real question is: "wasn't this guys pension/retirement/boondoggle" enough??? he has to go and "allegedly" steal from the taxpayers on a more eggregious level?
Let's see how quickly the FD "brotherhood" tries to sweep this one under the rug.

If we are to go with statistics, firemen rarely run into burning homes. They let burning homes burn and fight them from the outside.
Right now, based on what we all know, firemen have the hands down best jobs in America. They don't sit behind computers all day. Their work hours and weeks are the envy of the workforce. And what is the boss going to fire them for, poor work ethic? Sitting around all day? How often do you hear of a fireman getting fired. But how often have private sector employees been "let go," downsized. And where is the private sector retirement? Retiring at 51. I say FU to the government hacks that allowed that to happen.

Regarding the comment on "highly paid execs"- they are not paid by the public! If I don't like the way Apple execs are compensated, I don't have to buy their goods and services. As taxpayers, we have no choice but to fund this lavish payscale for firefighters. It's out of control. A teacher has to have a college education, and probably has a more dangerous job, but make a fraction of the pay these guys get. It's not right or fair.

The hindsight when we find we have been royally screwed by the fire department is something to behold. They mesmerize us with the tales of running into burning buildings when the reality is very few of them in an entire career will ever have to do this. Is manipulative too strong a word? Citizen's, it's our fault this ever got to the point it is as we allowed ourselves and our elected representatives to be had by these holier than thou charlatans.

Don't look now, but the Fire District Board is handsomely compensated too. The cats and the rats get along just fine.
